Founder’s story

Hello, I’m Hannah Martin, the founder of Rich Retiree. I’m also the founder of Talented Ladies Club, as well as an award-winning advertising copywriter, and a qualified psychotherapist, hypnotherapist and NLP Practitioner. I’m 53, and live on the south coast of England with my husband and two children.

For most of my life, I saw retirement the way many of us do — something far off, slightly unclear, not particularly urgent and, quite frankly, not something to get too excited about.

But as the years passed, and my friends and I got close to our 50s and then 60s, I found myself thinking about it more seriously. I had a growing awareness: time is valuable, even more so as it slips away, and how we spend it matters.

I also started noticing how people chose to spend their time as they worked less or stopped completely. I saw that there was no single way to ‘retire’, and that we could actually have more options than when we were younger, not less.

What if retirement is about stepping into something new and exciting?

That realisation sparked a question: What if retirement wasn’t about stepping back, but stepping into something new? Not the end of work, but the beginning of a chapter you get to shape on your terms.

That question changed everything for me.

As I began exploring retirement more deeply – pensions, planning, health and lifestyle – two things became clear:

  • First, retirement isn’t a short phase. It can stretch 20, even 30 years, and it deserves more than vague hopes – it needs a plan.
  • And second, most of the advice out there isn’t designed with today’s women in mind.

Much of what you can find online right now feels too dry, too generic, too old-fashioned, too grey, and too dull. There isn’t much that recognises the complexity of our lives, or the idea that retirement could be a rich and meaningful stage of life.

Too many women are financially and emotionally unprepared for retirement

From talking to women in their 40s and 50s, I realised that many of us are financially and emotionally unprepared for this important stage of our lives. But the good news is that there is a lot we can do right now to ensure our retirement years are rich – in every sense of the word.

Working with PensionBee in particular has shown me how important it is to take action and look at our options differently. I can see more clearly what is possible, and how confusing the retirement landscape can be without the right guidance.

Our retirement is something we need to consciously create

So, over the past three years I have dived into financial education, lifestyle design, and wellbeing planning. And in this I have discovered a sense of freedom. I realise now that retirement isn’t a destination you arrive at — it’s a living, breathing evolving stage of our lives, and it is something we need to consciously create. And what is missing isn’t just better information; it is awareness and imagination.

Earlier this year, I came to the realisation that, as the resource I would want to have didn’t exist, I would need to create it myself. Much like when I launched Talented Ladies Club to fill a then-gap in inspiration and advice for ambitious mothers, I want to build something that excites and empowers women, and helps them plan for a truly rich retirement.

So, in the past few months I have been building, with the help of the Talented Ladies Club team, a new online space for woman over 45 to feel more informed, more confident, more excited and more in control of their next chapter – and this is Rich Retiree!
